Sources & Research Library

Understand how citations, source locations, uncertainty and cultural permissions support the language collection.

What each record preserves

Required publication evidence

Language identification

The specific language or dialect, supported by the source, is recorded separately from the broader Algonquian family.

Source title and locator

A bibliographic title plus a precise page, entry, archive reference or source URL allows material to be checked.

Attribution and certainty

Historical transcription, contemporary community teaching and scholarly reconstruction require different labels.

Rights and access

The archive records whether reuse permission is granted, a suitable license is verified, public-domain status is established, or use is restricted.

Reviewer decision

Authorized reviewers approve a saved version of the content after checking the source and publication criteria.

Corrections and updates

Changes to approved source, wording, meaning or language classification require renewed review.

Research process

From source to public record

  1. Identify a credible original or attributed source.
  2. Record exact spelling, location, date and named language without inventing missing details.
  3. Record interpretation and certainty separately; preserve disagreement where applicable.
  4. Verify reuse rights and whether the source community restricts the use of specific material.
  5. Submit a draft; await human editorial review before public release.

Corrections matter

A citation provides traceability, not automatic proof that a translation or interpretation is correct. Where available evidence conflicts, the record must say so.
