NATIONS

Column 1 — Regions

  • North
  • Central
  • South
  • Africa
  • India
  • Asia
  • Australia

Purpose: Geographic orientation for diaspora, cultural continuity, and comparative Indigenous studies.

Column 2 — Quin (Cultural Groupings & Continuity)

  • Pequot
Why included: The Pequot people represent one of the most documented Indigenous nations of southern New England. Their history reflects early resistance, survival, and legal continuity under colonial pressure. Inclusion acknowledges regional continuity, not substitution or appropriation.
  • Mohegan
Why included: Closely related linguistically and culturally to the Pequot, the Mohegan experience illustrates intra-Indigenous governance evolution, treaty relationships, and adaptive survival within Connecticut’s historical record.
  • Siwanoy (Siwanoy / Siwenoy)
Why included: The Siwanoy occupied coastal and inland territories spanning present-day Connecticut and New York. Their inclusion recognizes coastal Algonquian presence and the often-overlooked continuity of smaller nations absorbed by colonial boundary making.
  • Tunxis (Tunix)
Why included: The Tunxis people historically inhabited central Connecticut. Their near erasure from public memory makes inclusion essential for restorative historical accuracy and educational integrity.
  • Quinnipiac
Why included: The Quinnipiac nation is foundational to the New Haven region. Including them supports accurate regional history and reinforces the principle that Indigenous presence predates all municipal formations.
  • Paugussett
Why included: The Paugussett people’s documented continuity across western Connecticut supports claims of uninterrupted Indigenous presence despite displacement and renaming.
  • Algonquian Language Family (Contextual)
Why included: Serves as an educational anchor to explain linguistic, cultural, and relational ties without collapsing distinct nations into a single identity.
